Risings PvM MF FrostDreamer [HolyShock/HolyFreeze/Zeal] GUIDE V1.0 !

Hey guys, Ive been a member of this forum for 2+ years already, but this is the first time Ive actually written a guide. Im sure many of you have seen me around (at least most of the USWest Forumers). My inspiration for this build has been to create something unique and new after always using other builds and making cookie-cutters. I wanted to have some fun =) *and I succeeded*

This is a pretty expensive character. [Although your gear doesnt have to be what I listed, the only crucial items are the two Dreams and the Crescent Moon]

I chose the combo of Holy Freeze in favour of Fanat or Convic on my Pally for several reasons. First of all, I feel that conviction is almost as good at -85 (as supplied by lvl 12 via infinity) compared to -150 (as supplied by a lvl 20 conviction). Why? Because monsters generally have very low resist to something (ie. 25) or very high (ie. 100). Conviction will work fully on non-immune monsters (the 25 ones), so with -85 that leaves them at -60 to all resistances. With -35 from Crescent Moon this brings them to -95 (which is ALMOST -100). As lightning damage accounts for roughly 3/5, this is sufficient resist to maximize our damage. On the other hand, Conviction works a bit differently for immunes. It will only function at 1/5 effectiveness when it is breaking an immune. This means that if a monster has 100 Lightning resist and you have level 12 Conviction active, the monsters lightning resist will drop to [100 (85 x 0.2)] which is 83. The -35 from Crescent Moon then acts on the 83, bringing it down to 48. If level 20 Conviction had been active: [100 (150 x .2)] = 70 35 = 35. Thus the differences from -150 and -85 are cut by 1/5.

More calculations (simplified)

Using 1000 Lightning Damage and 500 Cold Damage:

*Typical Fire Immune Monster*

Hitting a monster with 25 Light Resist, 50 Cold Resist [Level 20 Conviction]

1000 + (-1000)(.25 1.50 - 35 = -1.60 but = -1.00 as its the lowest it can go) = 2000 Lightning

700 + (-700)(.50 1.50 = -1.00) = 1400 Cold Damage

3400 Damage

Hitting a monster with 25 Light Resist, 50 Cold Resist [Level 12 Conviction]

1000 + (-1000)(.25 0.85 0.35 = -0.95) = 1950 Lightning

700 + (-700)(.50 0.85 = -0.35) = 945 Cold Damage

2895 Damage

Not that big of a difference, ~17% increase

*Typical Light Immune Monster*

Using same damages on 100 Light Resist, 0 Cold Resist [Level 20]

1000 + (1000 x -0.35) = 650 Lightning

700 + (700 x 1) = 1400 Cold Damage

2050 Damage

[Level 12]

1000 + (1000 x -0.48) = 520 Lightning

700 + (700 x 0.85) = 1295 Cold Damage

1815 Damage

Difference ~13% increase

*Typical Cold Immune Monster*

150 Cold Resist, 0 Light Resist

[Level 20]

1000 + (1000 x 1) = 2000 Light Damage

Cold is Unbreakable = 0 Cold Damage

2000 Damage

[Level 12]

1000 + (1000 x 0.95) = 1950 Light Damage

Cold is Unbreakable = 0 Cold Damage

1950 Damage

Difference ~2.5% increase

Of course, there will be situations where the -150 will be better than what these numbers show, but I have chosen resists from typical monsters which are common.

Other Common Combinations I have seen:

[First is your auras] [Second is Mercs Auras]

Fanat/Holy Shock and Might/Conviction -> Great Speed and Physical Damage but Light Immune/Physical Immune monsters are actually more common than you think. Instant death from Iron Maiden, Conviction is not as beneficial (only benefits lightning). Monsters usually have 50% Physical Resistance in Hell; damage increase is actually not that big. Nice additional leech makes you and your merc tanks, but Redemption solves this easily for the FrostDreamer. Finally, aura Pulse Damage is less due to Mercs unsynergized Holy Freeze.

Convic/Holy Shock and Might/Holy Freeze -> Nice balance but also lacks in speed, no cold damage from Holy Freeze to your weapon, less pulse damage. On the bright side less reliance on Merc which is a plus.

Convic/Holy Shock and Fanat A1 Merc -> Misses out on big holy freeze slow % and cold damage. However this is the best solution to Iron Maiden. Merc survives pretty easily which is good.

[THE ACTUAL BUILD]

Here are goals we reach for this build:

Offensive:

5 FPS Zeal [yea, its a frame short of the fastest]

Level 30 Holy Shock Weapon/Pulse Damage [1- 7005 / 4 1167]

Level 30 Holy Freeze Weapon/Pulse Damage [2078- 2105 / 415 421]

Total Weapon/Pulse Damage [2079 9110 / 419 1588]

Level 13 Static Field via 7% CTC Crescent Moon

Level 12 Conviction via Merc Infinity [-85 all Resists]

Further -35 Lightning Resist via Crescent Moon

Defensive:

75% Chance to Block

Very High Defense Defiance Mercenary

85L/75C/85F/75P Resists in Hell

3.5K+ Life

48% FHR [or one lower, its plenty though]

Other:

30FCR Tele [This is more useful than it sounds]

Redemption Aura on Switch [Think Full Juvies]

Monsters slowed 57% by Holy Freeze

400+ MF [This is after all, a MF-ish Guide]

Now, on to stats which should be easy enough:

Strength: Base

Dex: Max block (around 160 180)

Vitality: Everything Else

Energy: Base

And this puts us at Skills!

Combat Skills:

Sacrifice, Zeal, Smite, Holy bolt, Charge, Blessed Hammer 1

Holy Shield 10+ (Rest of points go here)

Offensive Auras:

Might, Holy Fire 1

Holy Freeze 20 [Main Skill]

Defensive Auras:

Resist Lightning 20 [Synergy for Main]

Resist Cold 20 [Synergy for Main]

Salvation 20 [Synergy for Mains]

Alas, on to GEAR!

Helm: Dream [Aim for high resists, MF is a bonus]

Shield: Dream [Note 48FHR BP is attainable with two dreams, just need moderately average rolls]

Ammy: Maras [Skills, Resists, Stats]

Weapon: Crescent Moon Phase Blade [Speed, Static, -35 Light, godly!]

Armour: Enigma Mage Plate [Life, Str, Tele, MF, godly!]

Rings: Raven Frost / 10FCR Ring or BK/SOJ/Wisp Projector/Nagel [I managed to find a rare 10FCR with Dual Leech and some Resists]

Belt: Arachnids [Skill, FCR]

Gloves: Chance Guards [MF, Gold]

Boots: War Travs [MF, FRW, Stats]

Switch: Pally Spirit and CTA War Scepter with Redemption! [This is really really useful.]

Merc Gear: Eth Infinity [Can go either Low Damage *Voulge or Poleaxe* OR High Damage *Eth Thresher, CA, CV* -> Low Damage prevents instant death from Iron Maiden, High Damage can kill and leeches a lot more], Guardian Angel [Eth + Upped is ideal, UM this thing!], Tal Mask [UM this thing too for some nice 90 Resists across the board, Merc needs to be a tank!]

Strategies: I usually run Worldstone Keep + Baal, The Pits, Trav/Meph. Just go to WP, F5 -> F8 in order, charge into mobs and destroy! ;] Weapon Switch for handy dandy Redemption, continue on quests.. *Rinse and Repeat* !

I usually find that teleport is much more convenient as opposed to charge as it stations your merc right beside you. Your merc has a crucial role in this build so you must keep him close at all times. To move around you just need a quick F4 followed by F1 [typically what I do to get back to Holy Freeze], it only takes 10 minutes to get used to it. Charge I find not so useful since 30FCR gets me a decent tele speed. **NOTE** Whenever you click Holy Freeze it takes somewhere from a second to a full second for the aura to become active. Try to click Holy Freeze a bit earlier before you engage in battle or else monsters might die too fast! More like, you will be in the middle of them before they are slowed, which is a BIT dangerous.

Hotkeys are:

F1 Holy Freeze

F2 Zeal

F3 Charge

F4 Teleport

F5 Battle Command

F6 Battle Orders

F7 Holy Shield

F8 Redemption

Belt has [Full Juvies/TP Scrolls/Full Juvies/Super Mana Pots]

My Paladin.

Patriarch Glance

*therisingx1

[Level 85 and going]

Life: 3003

Mana: 515

Resists: 75/85/85/75

Damage: 2.4 9.5k

MF: 420%

This is a very ROUGH draft, and I will organize it when I have time. Unfortunately ladder resetted at a very bad time so some of these items (dream) may be hard to acquire if you play NL. Its gonna take ladder a while before people start having runewords as well

COMMENTS / SUGGESTIONS are appreciated, questions i will try and answer to the best of my ability. Good luck with this fun build!|||i've read a guide in the past with the same skills setup called a Storm Ranger. With a bow, obviously. The skill setup included Cold Resist and Lightning Resist as synergies though, you should consider that:

- 5 Zeal

- 20 Holy Freeze

- 20 Cold Resist (syn)

- 20 Holy Shock

- 20 Lightning Resist (syn)

rest in Zeal or Holy Shield for melee build.|||You can only have one aura active at a time, so that would seem like not a good usage of skill points. Also, without a shield you are MUCH more vulnerable to attacks.|||I like your guide.

Explains a lot about the build and why you should use this and that.

Ive got all the gear your listed so I might just try your build out.

Well, I didn't say I liked the build.|||Quote:

I think I like this build mostly cuz it is fun to play. On 1 Player games when I run pits many monsters die before i see them , and its always fun doing rapid charges that kill in 1 shot. Redemption is cool!

Once I get the resources I am going to try out a 4x 5/5 light facet + Shael + 15IAS/AR 6 socket Phase Blade, along with a 20IAS/MF Glove + Highlords. It'll give me better damage overall and 4FPS Zeal. Should be fun |||How about a Pheonix Sheild on switch if you cant get a Scepter with Redemption?|||thats an option as well, just loses 2skills to BO |||This actually sounds like a lot of fun, Hanson.

I just rushed a Pally up to hell and was wondering what to make. I had the idea of making a FoH dude but then I realized I wanted more of a PvM guy so then I stumbled onto yo ur guide here. Sounds like a lot of fun, I'll let you know how it turns out

If I'm not really going for the MF, would it be alright to use something in the place of the Chance Guards and War Travelers? Like Dracs and Treks?|||Well, Dracs would not help as much since the char deals low physical damage and Waterwalks would probably beat treks big time in PvM with the massive life and 5% fire resist (making the unbalanced max fire resist a bit more balanced)
