non ladder smiter questions?

hey guys, need a bit of info for my brother who plays non-ladder, i personally never played NL so have no experience :/

anyway, hes bored of his hammerdin and is looking to make a smiter to do uber trist,

1st Question: can you actually do uber trist non ladder?

2nd Question: gear selection for the smiter (obviously non ladder only items)

You can do the ubers with pretty cheap gear. Do a google search for "poorman uber tristram amazon basin". Should be the first link.
